Visual Editing

As a photo editor for the Columbia Missourian, I coordinated with reporters, photographers, designers and editors to create the best visual stories for the community. I was able to work on daily features, as well as longer stories requiring collaboration between each facet of the newsroom staff, including word editors, writers, and designers.

The front page to the left, along with its accompanying spread below, was a culmination of integrating all of these moving parts. With help from the reporter and the photographer, I organized the efforts to photograph this story from beginning to end, selecting the images that were published in print and online. Art transforming medicine was a long-term project that involved coordinating shoots with five different subjects. I worked with the photographer to edit each individually before putting together one cohesive story to accompany the written article. I was also heavily involved in the design process, pitching the three photos to be arranged vertically on the front page and choosing the portraits featured in the double truck. This project was beautifully executed and I'm so appreciative of everyone who made it possible. I especially want to thank Grace Kenyon, the writer, Clayton Steward, the photographer, and Nicole Gutierrez, the designer. View the online presentation here.
